We all know that first impressions are vital, and a pleasing and well-constructed landscape is a key consideration for most homeowners. However, maintaining a lavish garden or lawn can often seem too daunting or expensive.

The good news is that enhancing curbside appeal doesn't necessarily mean shelling out loads of cash. In our conversations with two skilled designers, we've gathered a range of easy and inexpensive strategies that can totally revamp the ambiance of your landscape this summer season. The best part – you don't have to compromise your personal style for it!

Plants provide an ideal way to introduce interest, color, and depth to a landscape, according to nature-inspired home designer Nina Lichtenstein. Despite the initial cost, well-chosen plants ensure a lasting return on investment.

"Choosing perennials and native plants that return year after year ensures sustained beauty and sustainability," Lichtenstein advises. "As these plants are suited to your local climate, they require less water and are more resistant to pests and diseases. This reduces maintenance costs while presenting consistent color and texture in your garden."

Now, onto the gardening beds. Dana Lee Calabrese, another prominent designer, believes that mulch is an inexpensive way to jazz up your landscape and support plant health.

"Mulch creates wonderful contrast between pathways, plants, and the bed areas, a cost-efficient yet striking difference," Calabrese explains.

Not only does it contribute aesthetically, but mulch also assists in maintaining soil moisture and suppressing weeds. As Lichtenstein mentions, "Organic mulches such as bark, wood chips, or compost enrich the soil as they decompose."

How about boosting the vitality of your plant-filled and mulch-enriched garden bed? Edging is a helpful technique in this regard, establishing a distinct separation between beds from your backyard or driveway.

Though certain edging methods might be expensive, you can easily create affordable alternatives. "By utilizing bricks, rocks, stones, or pebbles, affordable materials that you might already have, you can set garden beds, pathways, and lawn edges," Lichtenstein states. "This minor detail can significantly amplify the overall appearance of your landscape."

In addition, don't limit your landscaping ambitions to garden design alone. The overall vibe of your front yard, backyard, patios, porches, pathways, and even your home's exterior can fall under the landscaping umbrella.

Calabrese loves making use of intricate tiles for the front entry whenever possible, as it allows the space to stand out and feel uniquely designed.

Installing patterned tiles to your front porch can immediately captivate the viewer and make your front door appear highly inviting. Moreover, harmonizing the tile's color with your front door paint, nearby flowers, and the tones of the local environment can greatly enhance curbside appeal.

According to both designers, incorporating or upgrading outdoor lighting is a non-negotiable aspect of any landscaping revamp.

"When operating outdoors, I always seek ways to hang string lights," says Calabrese. "They lend immediate 'wow' factor and create a profound impact when entertaining outside or simply lounging on your back patio.".

Create a snug atmosphere for evening get-togethers through landscape lighting, suggests Lichtenstein. Particularly, solar-powered lights can be conveniently installed and are available in numerous styles.

The idea of including sculptural elements or a water feature in your garden may seem beyond your budget. However, a minimal approach can yield significant benefits.

Integrating a water feature like a tiny fountain or a birdbath can establish a serene focus point in your garden. They come in cost-effective DIY variants that are simple to assemble. The soothing sound of gentle water can boost your garden's tranquil ambiance without heavy financial investment.

Lastly, our designers suggest that you bring out your painting materials or craft DIY planters to add the most personality to your landscape. Repurposing items like wooden crates can add unique flair to your garden without hammering your budget, says Lichtenstein.

Involving your family in the landscaping endeavor can create cherished fixtures to last you for many years. Erecting homemade garden art such as painted rocks, mosaics, or repurposed sculptures can add focal points and personal touches to your landscape.
