Summertime signals the opportunity to turn your backyard into a private escape - a sanctuary free from prying eyes and unwanted background noise. And the good news? You won't have to break the bank to achieve this.

Design experts have shared their top budget-friendly tips for turning any outdoor area into a personal retreat. From savvy use of greenery to clever application of screens, these suggestions demonstrate that you don't have to splurge to create your personal tranquil paradise.

Outdoor screens, which can be easily situated where needed, are an unsung hero when it comes to quick and affordable privacy solutions. Jessica Love, who works for Urbane Design Studios, explains how "they're cost-effective, temporary, and ideal for concealing specific areas-like shielding your lounge zone from surrounding neighbors!" The added bonus, she says, is that they come in various materials and designs, offering a decorative touch as well as function.

For those who rent their homes, screens are particularly useful as they can be rearranged and stowed away when needed. To add more style with minimal cost, try incorporating fast-growing plants like jasmine and clematis in deep, elongated containers backed by a lattice-like screen. Kevin Lenhart, the design director of Yardzen, claims that "they're relatively inexpensive and easy to install or move around."

These natural "curtains" offer a sense of privacy that doesn't carry a hefty price tag. Thick and luscious vines covering an existing fence will add another layer of seclusion to your backyard, leaving it feeling more cloistered and less exposed.

Lenhart suggests that sometimes, achieving privacy is as simple as employing the power of plants. "A dense canopy of greenery can transform even a suburban yard into a secret garden". Moreover, this plant-based privacy approach often costs less than constructed partitions and walls and boasts a more pleasing aesthetic. A combination of shrubs, ornamental grasses, and slim fruit trees arranged purposefully can serve as a green fortress, providing you with a beautiful, secluded retreat within your own property.

Creative lighting techniques can also go a long way in making an outdoor space feel more private. Love advocates the judicious use of string lights, solar lanterns, and uplighting behind plants or screens "to etch out distinct 'rooms' in the yard." Such tactical lighting helps draw attention inward, away from external distractions, rendering your property a cozy, inviting sanctuary after dark.

Trellises represent another cost-effective approach to privacy. They offer the double delight of functioning as a privacy screen and a vertical garden simultaneously. Trellises fitted with fast-climbing vines create a lush green wall, affording you privacy without resorting to permanent constructions or incurring high costs.

Even your outdoor furniture can get in on the act. Placing a bench with its back to the area you wish to shield, or positioning seating into a corner bordered by plants, having a strategic furniture layout can create a sense of privacy. Smaller spaces can also use this hack by choosing pieces like hooded or egg-shaped rattan chairs-they not only block the view, but also serve as a chic retreat, perfect for some personal downtime.
