As the onset of summer encourages us to spend more time outdoor, we cannot ignore that mosquitoes are likely to join us. These resilient insects are not just a nuisance, their bites cause painful, swollen welts and in extreme cases, they could even spread disease. So how can you keep your yard mosquito-free? Pest control experts have chimed in on the issue, providing insight and remedies.

According to Natasha Oldham of MissQuito, humans are a prime target for mosquitoes who feed on our blood. This is more probable when we've undergone physical activities, consumed alcohol or, if we are pregnant, as these conditions increase our carbon dioxide emission, which attracts them. To avoid receiving unwanted attention from these pests, Oldham suggests reducing intake of sugary and salty foods. Furthermore, it's essential to be mindful of scented products and the color of clothing we choose to wear outdoors, as mosquitoes are particularly attracted to botanical scents and colors like red, black, and orange. On the other hand, neutral colors like white, green, or purple are less enticing to these pests.

Standing water poses a significant problem as it encourages the growth and development of mosquitoes, says entomologist David Price. Oldham notes that even a bottle cap filled with water could turn into a breeding ground for these tiny invaders. Hence, it's crucial to frequently check and empty areas prone to collecting water in your yard, especially post rainfall.

Unkempt gutters and moisture-retaining mulch are potential hotspots for mosquito breeding. Alan Bossel, a licensed exterminator, recommends a routine cleaning of gutters and advises against allowing mulch to retain too much water. Moreover, frequently cleaning pet dishes and children's pools can deter mosquito invasion.

Optimal lawn maintenance is another aspect to consider when dealing with mosquitoes. Tony King, a pest control expert, cautions against overwatering the lawn and providing shade that mosquitoes find appealing. Regularly mowing the lawn, pruning foliages, and maintaining a neat yard can substantially reduce mosquito presence.

The type of outdoor lighting and even the grill's grease traps can potentially lure mosquitoes. Bossel advises using yellow LED bulbs and regularly cleaning grill grease traps to prevent attracting these bugs. Fans also provide a simple solution as mosquitoes cannot navigate against the wind.

Undoubtedly, mosquitoes are a bothersome aspect of summer. However, implementing these expert strategies can help you reclaim your yard and enjoy the outdoors, mosquito-free.
